I use the same setup as what David described. I spend most of my time online and I have heard that a firewall will decrease my speed. So, I've been online now for close to 10 years without using a firewall at home.

I do of course use anti-virus software.

I'm going to "side" with David on that.

I've never used a firewall at home. I had tried the usual free stuff like Zone Alarm only to see my access speeds decline. So I uninstalled it and never bothered again. Being behind a router does the trick for me.

That said, I would NEVER do that in a corporate/business environment.

At that stage, you definitely need real protection.

1. I like my Trendnet hardware firewall model TW100-BRM504 which I purchased almost two years ago. I like the product because it is a firewall and adsl modem all in one unit.

2. Doesn't affect the computer utilization you are using.

3. I found it easy to use, might be harder to use if you have never used a product like this before.

4. The first unit I purchase died in the first couple of months, No power. Trendnet replaced the unit and the new one has been working great ever since.

5. I think all internet users should use a hardware firewall/router. I think they gave a lot of protection to new users and new installations of any operating systems. For example I have seen and heard of new installations of Windows being infected with a virus within minutes of going online the internet.

If you would like to check out their products go to <a href="http://www.trendnet.com"target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.trendnet.com</a>
